How to use Plan My Career
Understand Career
Your career is the collection of all your experiences related to the world of work. From your humble beginnings as a lemonade vendor to the moment you cashed (or will cash!) your first pay cheque, all experiences have the potential to be career defining moments. With each experience, you gain new clarity and focus within your career. This is the essence of career development.
Understand Career Decision-Making
Essentially, making a decision about your career direction involves five steps: assess yourself (Discover who I am), research the world of work (Explore my options), analyze your options and make a decision (Choose my direction), and then create a plan to make it happen (Achieve my goals and Join the workforce)! This sequence of steps rarely unfolds in this exact order (e.g. many of us are assessing, researching, and job searching all at the same time!), and it is not unusual for a person to walk through many of these steps several times over the length of their career. In fact, an important part of maintaining and managing your career (Continue to develop) involves ongoing re-evaluation and assessment of the fit between you and your career!
Make a commitment
Defining and creating your career is not going to happen over night. Some pieces may fall seamlessly into place, but deciding where you want to go and getting there is going to take some time, thought, and good old elbow grease!
