As part of your job search, you are strongly encouraged to actively monitor the opportunities that are being placed on the SECC job posting system.
Application procedures will vary with each company; employers differ in the application materials that they require and how they would like to receive the documents. Ensure that you read each posting carefully to make sure that you have all required documentation and understand how to apply. Application procedures can include applying directly to the company/organization or submitting your application to the SECC.
Requests for University of Saskatchewan transcripts are made through Student Central/PAWS and may take up to five days to receive. Although there is a minor cost involved, it is only necessary to order one official copy and make copies for the jobs that request they be submitted. Order one official transcript every fall and possibly even after every term (if required). Even if you are a first year student, it can be important to have a copy of your university transcript, because many employers will be interested in the courses for which you are currently registered.
For those who have transferred from another post-secondary institution, it may be necessary to provide a copy of transcripts from the other institution(s), along with your transcripts from the University of Saskatchewan. If you are asked to e-mail a copy of your official transcript, you may wish to scan your transcripts—scanners are available at many of the computer labs on campus. Ensure that you save the scanned image in a commonly utilized file format, such as .jpg or .pdf.
For more information, see the Cover Letter Guide and Resume Guide.
Once you have made necessary preparations/updates, visit one of the QuickTalk sessions offered by the SECC. QuickTalks are interactive, drop-in sessions, designed to address specific questions regarding your resume and/or cover letter. Sessions are offered at various times throughout the week. Visit SECC website for more information and a list of timeslots available.
The CACEE Form (pronounced “Casey”), is a standardized application form that was developed by the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE). Although the form can initially require a significant amount of time to complete (3 – 4 hours), it provides an in-depth summary of your skills and qualifications and can be readily updated if required for other positions.
It is only necessary to complete the CACEE Form if specifically requested in the application procedure.
The Driver’s Abstract is a record of your personal driving history and can be obtained from any Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) office or motor license issuer for a nominal fee. Unless originals are specifically requested, submit a photocopy with your application. A driver’s abstract is often required if you will be using a company vehicle throughout the course of your potential employment.
As part of your job search, you are strongly encouraged to actively monitor the job opportunities that are being placed online.
You are required to assemble an application package for each company to which you are applying. The application procedure may be different for every employer; do not assume that one procedure is used for every company/organization. Ensure that you read each application procedure carefully to determine which documents are required and how to apply.
If you are applying to more than one position with the same company, determine from the job posting if you need to submit one application for all positions or a separate application for each position. If the employer has requested one application for all positions, list position titles or competition numbers clearly (in order of preference) as an RE: heading on the cover letter or CACEE Form.
Before you submit your application package(s) ensure:
Applications are accepted at the SECC front counter until 12:00 noon on the deadline date, unless otherwise stated. Please note that late applications will not be accepted. Again, it is important to note that the SECC does not accept applications for all of the job opportunities we post. Follow the application procedures listed on the job posting.
Please note that for Pharmacy recruitment, many companies will request that all interested applicants sign-up directly for an interview. In order to select an interview timeslot, applicants are requested to drop off a cover letter and resume for each company to which you are applying.
Once you have submitted your application package(s), the SECC ensures the applications are forwarded to the employer(s). The company may contact you directly regarding an interview or have the SECC arrange the interviews.
Allow ample time for the company to receive the application if sent by mail. If fax or e-mail are also listed as application methods, you may wish to send your application through one of these options based upon speed of delivery. Please note that the SECC provides a faxing service on a fee-for-service basis.
If the company requests that you apply online, check the Resume Guide for details on preparing your application.
Individuals who have been selected for an interview will be contacted by either the SECC or the employer. After you have submitted your application(s), it is important that you make sure you can be reached. You should regularly check your email and voicemail messages and also ensure that your message manager greeting is professional.
Once you have been notified of your selection for an interview, contact the SECC as soon as possible to book an interview time. Timeslots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you choose not to interview with a particular company, please let the SECC know of your decision. As a courtesy, contact the company personally to inform them that you are declining the interview.
Carefully evaluate all job offers (or potential job offers) prior to making any commitments. Factors to consider when evaluating your options can include: location, company culture, business practices, potential for career development/growth, short vs. long-term prospects, hours of work, alignment of skills/interests with the job, travel requirements, salary & benefits.
Some jobseekers find in useful to create a pro/con list comparing the criteria. It may be advantageous to rank the criteria that are important to you in making your decision, keeping in mind that all factors may not be weighted equally.
Only accept a job offer if you can fully commit to your acceptance. Once the offer is accepted, you are required to discontinue your job search, notifying all other companies to which you have applied. Accepted job offers are binding; it is unethical to accept with one company, only to decline and re-accept with another.
Drop in to meet informally with staff from the SECC to discuss your resume or cover letter.
